Rehearsals begin and end promptly. There are about 15 rehearsal for each of the series.
For the Winter Series rehearsals begin in September.
For the Spring Series rehearsals begin in February.
Attendance at all rehearsals is expected. Our attendance policy is spelled out
in a Member Handbook which singers are asked to review and agree to prior to joining Schola Cantorum
and each season thereafter.
In case of anticipated absences, singers are asked to "sign out" on the attendance roster
or contact the Schola Secretary prior to the absence if possible. Missed work is expected
to be remediated independently. Members also can consult
Rehearsal Notes
on this web site.
We are a learning chorus!
Rehearsals are conducted a cappella so that
members can work on their sight-singing
skills.
We study solfege
(from the Italian solfeggio). This means, as a learning exercise,
we sometimes rehearse melodies using the appropriate syllables of the musical
scale (do, re, mi, and so on) instead of using lyrics.
We do group rhythm and diction drills.
Our goal for each series is to be sufficiently secure to perform in
a mixed formation.
Sectional rehearsals
Sectionals are convened occasionally as deemed necessary by the Director or the singers.
Dress rehearsals
At least one dress rehearsal is required prior to each performance series. It generally
takes place the weekend prior to the first performance date,
or on Saturday of the performance weekend.
