Schola Cantorum:  Major Historical Events and Milestones

 

1994

August – Community Chorus formed by Dr. David Clayton in affiliation with Virginia Wesleyan College

 

1995

June – Inaugural Concert with Schola Cantorum performing an All Randall Thompson program (following extensive auditions and renaming)

June - Elected First Board consisting of Alison Wiley (President); Karen Goad (Vice President); and Bill Hunter (Treasurer); among others.

August – Incorporated in the Commonwealth of Virginia as Schola Cantorum

September – Applied for 501 (c) 3 status with IRS

December – Granted 501 (c) 3 status with IRS

 

 1996

Began applying for and receiving grants from area city Arts and Humanities commissions (Cities of Virginia Beach and Portsmouth - $1,000 each)

Ended affiliation with Virginia Wesleyan College

 

1997

May – Inaugural Spring A Cappella Concert "A Cappella I " - American Folk Music      

Dr. David Best elected as President with major shift in Board membership, except Treasurer

Several Board Members attended Chorus America Convention in Boston 

 

1998

Applied for and received grant from the City of Chesapeake  ($800)

August – Consultation with Tom Hall from Chorus America

 

1999

Applied for and received grant from the City of Newport News ($500)

Dr. Clayton resigns as Music Director, early Spring

Dr. David Means, Associate Professor of Music at Christopher Newport University, assumes role of Interim Director of Music

First CD recording – May 1999

 

2000

Dr. Means resigns

Dr. Lee Teply, Professor of Music at Old Dominion University, accepts position as Artistic Director of Schola Cantorum.

 

2001

Add one Board member and two advisors.

Dr. Teply and Bill Hunter attended Chorus America Conference in Toronto, CN

 

2002

CD – Americana Concert

Applied for and received grant from City of Hampton ($415)

Major Board change.  Kim Rouke (President), Bill Hunter (VP)

First Annual Summer Sing – Rutter's Requiem

 

2003

Chrysler Museum Performance in October – Venice: Music Capital of the Renaissance

2nd Annual Summer Sing – Mendelssohn's Elijah

 

2004

3rd Annual Summer Sing – Mozart's Requiem

3 educational workshops added to Summer Sing

 

2005

Performance on the Eastern Shore at The Palace Theater

Collaboration with Tidewater Guitar Orchestra – DVD recorded; Carneval!

Collaboration with Virginia Children’s Chorus Chamber Choir – Spring; Over the Edge

Performance at Attucks Theatre in Norfolk

4th Annual Summer Sing – Fauré Requiem

Dr. Teply  resigns as Artistic Director, early Summer
