Schola Cantorum literally means choir of cantors. We are a volunteer, auditioned ensemble of 20 to 24 voices. We perform choral music from early to contemporary classical composers, most of it a cappella.
Schola Cantorum was originally called together in August
1994 by Dr. David Clayton, chairman of the Virginia Wesleyan College (VWC)
music department. The turnout was so overwhelming and energetic that plans were
made during the ensuing performance year to formally organize the group.
Schola Cantorum was incorporated as a 501c(3) organization in August 1995.
During the 1997-1998 season, Schola Cantorum's performance
venues stretched beyond the grounds of Virginia Wesleyan into the greater
Hampton Roads community. In 1999, we became truly independent, no longer receiving
support from VWC. Regional grants, and generous donations from individuals
who enjoy fine chamber singing, now support us.

Throughout our six-year period of growth, and now under the direction of
Ms Agnes Mobley-Wynne,
Schola Cantorum has remained
true to our Mission Statement,
established when we incorporated:
|
Last summer we extended our efforts to include the first ever Summer Sing in the greater Hampton Roads area. The feedback from area singers was so positive that our Board of Directors decided to make the Summer Sing an annual event.
We have open Auditions for each concert series. Simply email our director Ms Agnes Mobley-Wynne and ask to set up an informal singing session. Members pay annual dues of $35, must have appropriate formal attire for concerts, pay for whatever music we have to order for the concerts, attend Sunday afternoon Rehearsals at Eastern Shore Chapel in Virginia Beach, and spend however much time is required to master the music for each concert series.
In addition to singers, Schola Cantorum is always on the lookout for people who would like to give of their time to serve on our Board of Directors. If you have interest in helping out in some way with our Board, please email our President, Mary Ann Malloy.
And, like any other small arts organization, we struggle financially. If you like what you hear and learn about Schola Cantorum, we ask that you consider making a tax deductible Donation to support our organization. Your donation will go straight to the cost of making music here in Hampton Roads. In addition your financial support will be documented for your records with a note from us and recognition in our concert series program. Please [conventional] mail your donation to the attention of our Treasurer, Joan Murray at Schola Cantorum, P.O. Box 1110, Norfolk, VA 23501.
